Legion Bail-Out!
During the spring and early summer of 2006,
severe rains caused flooding throughout New York State. One area flooded was Sidney, resulting in evacuation of part of the village and
damaging businesses.
American Legion Charles L. Jacobi Post 183, Union Street, was virtually
destroyed during the flood.
The waters caused damage in excess of $200,000 and no Federal Emergency
Management Administration (FEMA) help was available since the property was
not a private dwelling and
classified as "non-essential!"
by FEMA. The American Legion charter prohibits the post from soliciting help
from other Legion posts. Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 85 recognized the membership of Post 183 as
"brothers-in-arms" in need and decided to help out. Many VVA members are Legionnaires as well.
Following the VVA Motto " Never again will one generation of Veterans abandon another", Chapter 85
donated $500.00 to American Legion Post 183. Pictured above, VVA Chapter 85 Treasurer Walt Henriksen, right,
hands a check for $500 to
Post 183 Commander Milt Scherer.
